Did Director Catherine Hardwicke out RobSten?

Twilight fans are wondering if Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke outed Rob Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in her recent interview with Time Magazine. There have been many speculations on whether or not there's something going on between Rob and Kristen on and off screen.

In Catherine's interview with Time, she claims that Kristen told her directly that she decided to try to be with Rob. Here's an excerpt from her Time interview:

By all accounts, the chemistry between the two leads was intense, maybe too intense. “After I cast him, I told Rob, Don’t even think about having a romance with her,” Hardwicke says. “She’s under 18. You will be arrested.” It was the beginning of the real-life are-they-aren’t-they, did-they-didn’t-they speculation that is now an ongoing subplot of the Twilight story. “I didn’t have a camera in the hotel room. I cannot say,” Hardwicke says. “But in terms of what Kristen told me directly, it didn’t happen on the first movie. Nothing crossed the line while on the first film. I think it took a long time for Kristen to realize, O.K., I’ve got to give this a go and really try to be with this person.” Click here to read the rest

The best Twilight DVD Audio Commentary

I don't usually listen to the audio commentary on any of my DVD's but I swear the audio commentary for Twilight is so hilarious. Here's an example of a funny line from Robert during the audio commentary for Twilight:

    Edward: What do we eat?
    Rob: Cheeseburgers!

Catherine Hardwicke talks about making it in male-dominated Hollywood

Catherine Hardwicke will recieve the Ann Richards Award at the Texas Film Hall of Fame Awards this Thursday (March 12). Austin360 caught up with the University of Texas graduate to discuss her Texas roots, the "Twilight" phenomenon and the struggle women face in the movie business.

American-Statesman: You studied architecture at The University of Texas. How did you transition from that to filmmaking?

Catherine Hardwicke: I'd done this crazy [senior] project ... just very hilarious, theatrical and elaborate. ... At the end of my presentation, none of the teachers or faculty said anything. Their jaws just dropped, and they just moved on to the next person. About a week later, one of the visiting critics came up and said, "You know what? I've been thinking about you, and you shouldn't be in architecture. Architecture is not going to encourage your kind of creativity. You should find something else." [Laughs]

Twilight Director’s Diaries

Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke gave Entertainment Weekly a first look at her diary from the blockbuster hit in this week's issue. She talks about why she left the franchise she loved and how painful it is for her to see the new director getting more than what she's been promised.

She's been in negotiations with Summit Entertainment to direct the highly anticipated Twilight sequel, New Moon. Summit offered Hardwicke a huge raise which according to her, "More money than I or anyone in my family has ever seen.” But there's a catch. She was told that she'd be working on a tight deadline a modest budget. She therefore declined the offer and told the studio to find a new director. “I was devastated,” she says. “I really did feel a strong connection to the people around the world that liked the movie – and to Stephenie and the actors. But I just didn’t think I could make a good movie under those circumstances.”

Even before she left the franchise, Hardwicke has been discussing the posibility of Twilight: Director’s Notebook with Stephenie Meyer's publisher from Little Brown and Company last summer. Then Twilight took the over the box office, earning almost $70 million on its opening weekend and $356 million worlwide. When the movie made enough money, they thought it was worth it,” says Hardwicke. “They said, ‘Now you have three and a half weeks to do it!’ And I was like, Okay, I’m just going to keep writing until they rip this out of my hands!”

New Moon is currently in pre-production under new director Chris Weitz (Golden Compass, About a Boy) and is expected to start filming in March in Vancouver and Italy. But according to Hardwicke “I know the budget they were talking about with me – they’ve already gone way beyond that, I’m optimistic that it’s going to be great, and I’m sad that it didn’t work out for me to do it,” she said. “But I’ll do something else cool.”

Catherine Hardwicke Tells Why She Turned Down 'New Moon'

Catherine Hardwicke declined a huge paycheck for doing the Twilight sequel 'New Moon' due to budget constraints. She told Entertainment Weekly that she remembers how she got the news about the pay raise. She was having dinner with "Twilight" stars Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in Paris when she got the call from Summit Entertainment, which offered her "more money than I or anyone in my family has ever seen." "I was devastated," said Hardwick, who will release her book "Twilight: Director's Notebook" in March. "I really did feel a strong connection to the people around the world that liked the movie, and to Stephenie and the actors. But I just didn't think I could make a good movie under those circumstances." Click here to read more.

The reason for Catherine Hardwicke's replacement in New Moon

According to the article in LA Times, Rob Friedman, CEO fro Summit Entertainment, insists that the "Twilight" sequel, "New Moon," was not being rushed into production like the previews reports stated. Seems like, Hardwicke’s departure was more than just a “Time” issue as she previously stated in her interview with Variety Magazine. Here are some excerpts from the article:

“Rob Friedman insists that the "Twilight" sequel, "New Moon," was not being rushed into production. "We love the draft she turned in," he says. "Melissa has worked very hard on the material and was an integral part of what made the original film such a success. This is not a rush job. The movie only gets released when its finished. I'd like it to be next year, but we're not going to put out a bad movie to hit a release date."
On the other hand, Summit can't dawdle. Unlike with "Harry Potter," whose characters aged with each book, the characters in the "Twilight" series remain young forever, so if the studio is going to rely on its newly minted stars, Kristen Stewart and Rob Pattinson, to carry the entire series, it has to move full speed ahead. Summit has options on its lead actors, but since they are now in demand for other films, if Summit doesn't press ahead quickly, it could lose them for months on end to other productions. “ Read more

Summit Announcement

SUMMIT BEGINS SEARCH FOR NEW MOON DIRECTOR

Los Angeles, CA, December 7, 2008 – Summit Entertainment and director Catherine Hardwicke jointly announced today that the filmmaker will not be directing the next installment in the newly minted TWILIGHT film franchise. Summit’s targeted end of 2009 or early 2010 release of the film, NEW MOON, does not work with Ms. Hardwicke’s required prep time to bring her vision of the film to the big screen. Thus as has been done before with many successful film franchises, the studio will employ a new director for NEW MOON.

"I am sorry that due to timing I will not have the opportunity to direct NEW MOON,” said Hardwicke. “Directing TWILIGHT has been one of the great experiences of my life, and I am grateful to the fans for their passionate support of the film. I wish everyone at Summit the best with the sequel– it is a great story."

“Catherine did an incredible job in helping us to launch the TWILIGHT franchise and we thank her for all of her efforts and we very much hope to work with her on future Summit projects,” said Erik Feig, Summit’s President of Production. “We as a studio have a mandate to bring the next installment in the franchise to the big screen in a timely fashion so that fans can get more of Edward, Bella and all of the characters that Stephenie Meyer has created. We are able to pursue an aggressive time frame as we have the luxury of only adapting the novels into screenplays as opposed to having to create a storyline from scratch.”
