Taylor Lautner Q & A with Rolling Stone

Taylor Lautner sat down with Rolling Stone. He talk about Jacob's relationship with Bella and their love triangle with Edward.

Don't you think that when some fans see New Moon, they may be disappointed, because you're kind of the villain in a way.
I have some pretty passionate team Jacob fans [laughs].

Right. But you're also the obstacle getting in the way of the great romance between Bella and Edward.
I can see where you're coming from. The thing is, Jacob and Edward are two completely different guys. They are opposites. And it's just what kind of girl you are. If you like that more mysterious, dangerous type, then that's one guy. I personally love Jacob and Bella's relationship, and how they began as friends. They are so much more open, and can tell each other anything. And Bella and Edward's relationship, it's always tense. It's always serious. But Jacob and Bella's friendship starts growing stronger and stronger and you just wonder if they can go past friends. It looks like that at some points.

But when your character hangs up on Edward in New Moon, it sets off the whole chain of events that almost lead to a major tragedy. That's something a villain would do.
Yes. that is part of Jacob's character. He can't really control himself. When he gets mad, he gets mad. And all Jacob has on his mind is on Bella. That's who he cares for. That's who he loves. If somebody gets in his way, it's not good. And he will explode. So I guess you could see that either way.

And then Bella is always lying to Edward so she can see you. This is supposed to be like true love forever, so why can't she just be honest?
You know, she's serious with Edward and then she meets best friend Jacob. She gets confused.

But you're not really her friend. You have an agenda with her, and you're always making snide comments about Edward.
If I was Jacob, and I feel like I have lived as him, it gets so annoying. Because she's in the car with you one moment, about ready to kiss you and then she leaves and is with Edward. And then she's back with you, you know. Click here to read more

Times Live interview with Robert Pattinson

Rob Pattinson sat with the Times Live to talk about his Twilight, the paparazzi and how he's coping up with all the fame that comes with being Edward Cullen.

In Canada, he is shooting Eclipse, the third of Stephenie Meyer's quartet of novels. The second, New Moon, was released this month in a publicity extravaganza that involved shutting down New York's Times Square. The last time the actor was there, the square was also closed to traffic, for an event only marginally more fascinating to the world: the election victory of Barack Obama. We talk on the phone. Even now, a year afterTwilight's release, Pattinson sounds utterly stunned by the hysteria swirling around him.

"It's been a little frightening," he laughs, a sort of embarrassed chuckle, the sound of someone negotiating the best bit of luck they have ever had, not wanting to sound blasé or overexcited. "In England, no one had heard of the series when I went for the audition, so it has been a total, utter surprise. The change to my everyday life is so extreme. Before this, I was used to working 10 days a year. Originally, I did a three-picture deal, but I wasn't even really thinking about that . I had no idea I'd still be working on it now."

Does the poor boy, who still calls London home, feel he has to hide? "I tend to stay in the hotel because where I'm staying is publicised all the time. There's always a bunch of people outside. I can't really be in Los Angeles now at all. It's not that the fans are threatening, but the paparazzi follow me all night." This hounding can evoke an absurd sympathy, considering the kid's fortune and prospects. But then he brightens, telling me he was buying a guitar the other day and had to spell his name 12 times, and the guy still didn't twig. "I loved that."

When he read the first script, he had no idea how to play it. "I thought Bella, the heroine, would be a damsel in distress and I'd have to be the alpha-male hero type, so I thought I was never going to get it. But then they cast Kristen Stewart and she's not really like that, so I realised there was a different way to play Edward, to show his vulnerability." Could he get trapped and find it hard to move on to different sorts of roles?

"It worries me, because the whole Twilight thing keeps getting bigger and bigger, and now it's so big, even my own ego can't cope with it. A certain amount of success you can mentally deal with, but there's a point where you think: 'Jesus Christ, what is this? I'm not that great!' I just wanted to make an American film, and I wanted it to be relatively good and to be good in it. I have never pushed to do anything . As soon as you start going to the gym every day and try to look like a movie star, you're going down a worrisome track." He laughs. "Being an English guy, you get a lot more breaks. You're allowed to look a little worse. It's that thing about English teeth."

To say New Moon is eagerly awaited is like saying the Pope could use a miracle. Moreover, it promises to be twice as hormonally charged as Twilight, since it offers two poster boys for the price of one.

Is Pattinson embarrassed to have millions of girls in love with him? "The only time it's embarrassing is when you do a photo shoot and people try to force you to look clean-cut," he says. "When they use pictures where you're smiling sweetly and having your hair brushed, because that's not what you want to be known for. I don't really know why the girls love the movie so much. The series has become a bit of a cult. People like being part of the club. They're obsessed."

'New Moon' Star Michael Sheen Talks 'Twilight'-Crazed Daughter And Meeting The Queen On 'Bonnie Hunt'

You'd think with a tween daughter at home, Welsh actor Michael Sheen would have been declared a hero after landing a role in the super- hot "Twilight Saga." But when Michael stopped by "The Bonnie Hunt Show" today to talk about the series, he revealed that his 10-year-old's reaction wasn't quite what he had expected.

"It's a sort of double edged sword though," Michael explained about his role as "New Moon" dastardly vamp Aro. "I remember when I was her age, things I was really into, the last thing I wanted was my dad being into it as well. When I first told her, we were eating some food and I said, 'Look, I'm going to be in the next film. I'm going to play Aro.' And she was lifting the food to her mouth and she froze, and I thought, 'What is she doing?' and a tear started rolling down her cheek. And I thought, 'That's nice. That's exactly the reaction I want.' And then she punched me." Of course his daughter's reaction turned from distraught to elation once she realized she'd be attending the film's big premiere.

When Bonnie asked Michael how many times he's been questioned about Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson making out on set, the actor unsurprisingly played coy, changing the subject. "Everyone worked very hard," he replied. "It was quite weird for me to be on a set where everyone is so young and beautiful. It made me feel every one of my 2,000 years." Read more

Robert Pattinson offered $1.8 million an episode if Twilight franchise switches to TV?

According to News.com.au, Rob Pattinson is in negotiations with Summit Entertainment for $1.8 million per episode if they take Twilight to the small screen. I'm not sure how accurate this news is, but with "Breaking Dawn" still in the works and no official announcement from Summit has been made, I doubt that they will start another project without finalizing the last installment of the Twilight saga.
ROBERT Pattinson reportedly stands to pocket nearly $1.8 million per episode should the Twilight franchise be taken to the small screen.

The British actor is in negotiations with bosses at Summit Entertainment regarding a TV spin-off, according to Contactmusic magazine.

Pattinson, who plays Edward Cullen in the vampire film franchise, would earn $1.78 million per episode if reports about his involvement are true.

Producers hope to maximise the programme's popularity by launching the series next year after the release of the third movie in the franchise, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, in June next year.

The film has grossed more than $250 million in 10 days since its premiere in the US and $26 million in Australia.

Summit wants fan favorite Chris Weitz to direct 'Breaking Dawn'

According to Variety, fan and cast favorite director Chris Weitz is being considered to direct "Breaking Dawn." But finding a director for the last installment of the saga is not the complication that Summit is up against. They also have to consider the huge pay increase of Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner who only signed in for 4 movies. If "Breaking Dawn" becomes two films, then that means a hefty paycheck for the trio who are no international superstars. Read the article below from Variety.

The two-week $481 million worldwide gross of "New Moon" has vaulted Summit Entertainment into the big leagues, but it also has created a high-class challenge for toppers Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger.
They will likely have to cut a few big checks if they decided, as rumored, to split Stephenie Meyer's final "Twilight" novel, "Breaking Dawn," into two pictures. Sources said Summit has set Melissa Rosenberg -- who wrote the first three films -- to finish the series, but Summit has to clear several hurdles before Rosenberg learns how many more scripts she'll write.

One of those hurdles is figuring out whether "New Moon" director Chris Weitz will respond favorably to overtures from the film company and the cast to shoot two more films, back to back.

Summit execs would not comment, but multiple sources said the company wants to go the two-film route, which means reopening negotiations and securing approval from the author. It also means making new deals with a principal cast that is only locked up for four films. If "Breaking Dawn" becomes two pictures, all of the key cast members will get fat raises, and the three principals -- Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner -- could land paydays in the eight-figure range.

That's what happened with key cast members when Warner Bros. extended its blockbuster "Harry Potter" franchise by turning J.K. Rowling's last book, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," into two films that will be released in November 2010 and July 2011. The global success of the franchise made the paydays worthwhile.

While the solution to most of Summit's challenges will be determined by its willingness to open its wallet, the prospect of a Weitz return is more complicated.

After feeling violated by New Line's altering of his pic "The Golden Compass," Weitz said he felt redeemed and reinvigorated by the success of "New Moon." Yet, just before the film's release, Weitz was steadfast that he would next direct "The Gardener," a comparatively tiny film scripted by Eric Eason, with Paul Witt and Christian McLaughlin producing. At the time, he said Summit was in discussions to fund that film.

Summit hasn't closed a deal for "The Gardener," probably because the film company wants Weitz to postpone it and work on "Breaking Dawn" instead. Can Weitz resist the chance to finish a global franchise he helped build, even though it will mean more time away from his family for a long shoot? That's the question the helmer and his reps will weigh shortly. Though Summit hasn't officially made Weitz an offer, sources said the job is his if he wants it. After bringing in "New Moon" at around $50 million and keeping the cast happy, he's the logical choice.

"New Moon" stars TV Appearances

"The Twilight Saga: New Moon" brought in another boatload of money over the long Thanksgiving holiday weekend, and the cast certainly intends on bringing people back to the cinemas again and again. For the third week in a row, this week's talk shows are littered with stars from the second film in the "Twilight" series. While "The Late Show with David Letterman" and "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" are both on hiatus this week, there are still plenty of people worth losing sleep over on your television dial. Case in point: Jimmy Kimmel will welcome "New Moon" stars Kellan Lutz on Tuesday (December 1), Nikki Reed on Wednesday (December 2) and Ashley Greene on Thursday (December 3). And in case you missed it the first time around, "Jimmy Kimmel Live" will replay the episode that aired the day that "New Moon" opened — which featured Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner and Death Cab for Cutie — as a repeat tonight (November 30).

'New Moon': Why its girl-driven success is good for the future of movies

Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly talks about the Twilight Saga and how its girl-driven success might be good for future movies.

Offhand, it would be hard to think of a pop phenomenon as rapturously beloved as the Twilight saga that is also as vociferously hated. My God, the hate! If swoony-gauzy teen-bloodsucker romanticism with a golden-eyed indie-rock James Dean as love object isn’t your cup of passion, then fine — so be it. But why the frothing torrents of resentment? I was seriously shocked, for instance, reading some of the comments on Lisa’s recent post, to see that this much stone-pelting hostility could be directed at an actress as lovely and expressive as Kristen Stewart. What is her crime? Having a personality moody and brainy and distinctive enough that it carries over, maybe a bit too much, from one role to the next? (That was true, as well, of the young Jane Fonda, whom Stewart often recalls.) It makes me wonder what, deep down, is getting the haters so flea-bitten scratchy under the collar.

Frankly, I think it’s this: The ascendance of the Twilight saga represents an essential paradigm shift in youth-gender control of the pop marketplace. For the better part of two decades, teenage boys, and overgrown teenage boys, have essentially held sway over Hollywood, dictating, to a gargantuan degree, the varieties of movies that get made. Explosive truck-smashing action and grisly machete-wielding horror, inflated superhero fantasy and knockabout road-trip comedy: It has been, at heart, a boys’ pig-out, a playpen of testosterone at the megaplex. Sure, we have “chick flicks,” but that (demeaning) term implies that they’re an exception, a side course in the great popcorn smorgasboard. Read More

"New Moon" earns $474 million Worldwide in 2 Weeks

According to Reuters.com, "New Moon" took in $66 million during its five-day U.S. Thanksgiving holiday, pushing its total domestic sales in North America to $230.7 million and $243 million on foreign ticket sales bringing its worldwide total to $473,674,000.

LOS ANGELES, Nov 29 (Reuters) - "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" rose to the top of movie box office charts for the second straight week on Sunday with a three-day haul of $42.5 million on a record-breaking holiday weekend in North America, according to studio estimates.

Over the five-day U.S. Thanksgiving holiday, the vampire romance starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner took in $66 million, pushing its two-week total in theaters to $230.7 million in North America, said independent studio Summit Entertainment, which backed the movie.

Internationally, the high-profile sequel to last year's monster hit "Twilight," based on the best-selling novels by Stephenie Meyer, has taken in $243 million for a worldwide total just under $475 million in two weeks.

Richard Fay, president of domestic distribution for Summit, said the movie continued to do strong repeat business from mostly teenage girls who are fans of the movies and books, and it was able to expand its audiences to include older women.

Total movie ticket sales for the five-day holiday period in North America reached a record $278 million, beating the old figure of $244 million set back in 2000 when "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" and "Unbreakable" were the two top films, according to sales tracker Hollywood.com Box-Office.

EW Interview with Ashley Greene

Ashley Greene sat down with Entertainment Weekly and talked about her favorite scenes in New Moon and friendship with Kellan Lutz.

Are the reactions to Twilight the same all around the country?

I was impressed in Chicago, actually. Chicago was really, really intense and loud and I think it was one of the bigger responses that we had. But there’s always a lot of people, a lot of passion, a lot of screaming, a lot of crying. So really it’s all measured in terms of how deep the screaming goes.

Was it much different than last year?

I guess it’s more intense. I’m much more comfortable with this whole thing. I didn’t really know what to expect at all when I first got into it. It was my first gig, and so it was a little crazy and I was really nervous. And so now you know the fans are there because they love you and they support you.

What was your most memorable fan encounter?

I’ve had a couple people make me scrapbooks, and that’s kind of an incredible thing because I’m in a midst of this whirlwind right now so there are a lot of things that I miss because we’re in this Twilight bubble and it’s just go go go. So probably a year after this is all done, we can sit back and look at the scope of it. So it’s nice for them to put a collection of my career and what I’ve been going through together. That’s really special.

Why do you think fans are so obsessed?

I think with vampires, you can’t really go wrong. For generations, vampires have been a hit because they’re unobtainable, mysterious, sensual, dangerous, kind of sexy. Then Stephanie Meyer added a Romeo-and-Juliet love story to this fantasy world. Edward happens to be a vampire but he’s very much that gentleman who opens doors and says everything a girl wants to hear and he’s basically the epitome of perfection. And then you have Bella, this normal, everyday girl, which a lot of us are, and she steals this vampire’s heart. So everyone wants their Edward and everyone wants to be Bella.

How has playing Alice Cullen changed your career?

I didn’t really have a career! So that’s how it changed. But now I’m doing what I want and I know I’m going to continue to work. This is it; this is the rest of my life. I can walk into rooms and talk to directors and producers that I couldn’t get into their doors before. And I can actually sit down and speak to them like a human being and not be terrified of them. That, and of course, the fact that people care what kind of coffee I drink and who I’m dating and where I’m going. Nobody knew my name before and nobody cared and then all of a sudden in a course of a year, everything has changed. Read More

20 Differences (That Work) Between ‘New Moon' and the Book

Here's an article from FearNet.com comparing the differences between the "New Moon" book and movie.

    Way more shirtless boys!

We all hoped to get a glimpse of Edward's alabaster chest in Volterra, but who knew we'd get to see so much hot werewolf skin? Thankfully, the Wolf Pack run such high temperatures and explode away their clothes so frequently that cut-off jeans and no shirt are their shared ensemble of choice.

We get more fights, including an awesome Volturi throw down.

New Moon the book is infamous for its slow pacing, thanks to Bella's crippling depression (see below). So it's a good thing that the film throws in fistfights, wolf skirmishes, and chase scenes to liven things up a bit more. Our favorite: watching Volturi guard Felix put the smack down on our precious Edward, a scene crafted for the film.

Instead of talking to herself, Bella sends emails to Alice.

New Moon, like all of the Twilight books, makes frequent use of Bella's internal voice-overs to tell us what's going on in that angsty head of hers. In New Moon, Bella writes emails to her lost BFF, Alice, to work through her issues. We still get the voice-overs, but they're cleverly disguised as Bella's messages to Alice, and therefore much less "Vampire Diaries." (Also, creating a movie email address for Alice was a clever way to sneak in product placement for Apple's MobileMe email application.)

Bella's (a little) less mopey than she is in the books.

Much of the book is devoted to Bella's heartbreaking, months-long break-up depression, so it's a good thing that the film condenses her lost period a bit for the sake of storytelling. Critics complain already that Bella spends so much time staring into space, pining over Edward; if only they knew how much more we/she suffer in the books! Thankfully, Rosenberg's script snaps Bella out of her funk and moves on, sort of, in a relatively short span of time.

Bella's months-long depression, in the blink of an eye.

Fans were wondering how Chris Weitz would treat the infamous "lost" months of Bella's depression, which are depicted by blank pages in the book. After all, October, November, December, and January fly by as voids of nothingness to the girl. Weitz and Rosenberg's solution? A clever scene where Bella sits listless in front of her window as the camera moves around her to show the changing seasons outside. The trick captures her melancholia and is perfectly punctuated by Lykke Li's haunting, wistful track, "Possibility."

    Edward doesn't hide Bella's photos.

In the book, when Edward decides to break up with Bella and leave town, he also sneaks into her room and hides her photos of him so that she'll have no reminders at all that he existed – a complete and total abandonment. (Can you imagine a world without pictures of RPattz? It would be horrible, indeed.) In the film, we see him in her room, but there's no messing with photographs, which would have been an unnecessary minor plot point anyway. Plus, those folks who think Edward's a little stalker-like might have been even more creeped out by him rifling through her stuff. Instead, we get the full impact of Edward's absence in Bella's misery.*

Jacob gives Bella a dream catcher.

One new scene in the film has Jacob giving Bella a dream catcher for her birthday, killing two birds with one stone in the process: giving her a present when Edward feels he cannot and putting the mack on her with a big bear hug right in front of Edward. Bella hangs the dream catcher above her pillow, but unfortunately for her, it doesn't help keep the nightmares away.

Bella goes for a bike ride at One Eyed Pete's.

Bella's attempt to put herself out there by going to Port Angeles with Jessica takes a dangerous (and hilarious) turn when she accepts a ride with a burly, beefy biker in order to hang on to her visions of Edward. In the book, she stops short of hopping on the chopper, but in the film she takes a full-on joyride with a stranger. How boring would it have been if she'd just turned around and walked back to safety?

    More snarky Anna Kendrick!

Besides giving Bella her very first brush with danger, the biker scene serves another purpose: letting Anna Kendrick shine. As Jessica, Kendrick once again steals every scene she's in, and Bella's foolish biker episode gives her some of her very best frenemy lines of dialogue. Bonus: Kendrick's blissfully ignorant snark attack on zombie movies.

    Two words: Face Punch!

In addition to the zombie genre, New Moon has a little something to say about stupid action flicks. One of the best additions to the script involves Bella, Mike Newton, Jacob, and a popular (fake) blockbuster movie entitled Face Punch. (Tagline: "Let's DO this!")

Visions of RPattz dance in Bella's head.

While Bella's hallucinations of Edward in the books are purely auditory, there's no way that would fly in the film. So Weitz injects plenty of pretty Rob Pattinson shots throughout the entire duration of Edward's absence, scrumptious visions that come and go like wisps of smoke. And really, there's tons of RPattz bookmarking New Moon, so we don't miss him all that much. (What am I saying? There's always room for more RPattz!)

Victoria is definitely in the water.

When Bella is drowning after cliff-diving in New Moon, we clearly see Victoria swimming toward her in the water right before Jacob pulls her out of the water – something that was hinted at, but kept ambiguous, in the books. We like it better this way, as it makes Bella's danger more present and, let's be real, gives Rachelle Lefevre a little more to do, considering that she has exactly zero lines in the whole movie.

Bella hits Paul in the face!

In a film packed with phasing wolves and marble-cracking vampire fights, it's nice to see Bella get a little action. Angry that they've brainwashed her beloved Jacob, Bella confronts the Wolf Pack, shoves Sam Uley, and smacks Paul right in the kisser! Sure, it seems a little out of character, but at least in this moment, Bella is an agent of action and not merely reacting to the people around her. Plus, it leads into Paul's transformation and Jacob's mid-air phase, and the huge revelation of the Quileute secret.

Carlisle's Volturi painting comes to life.

Instead of waiting ‘til the end to meet the Volturi, we get an early peek at them when Carlisle's painting comes to life as Edward explains their history to Bella. Thank goodness! It would be such a waste to have even less of Aro & Co. in New Moon than the brief sequence we already get.

    Victoria attacks Harry Clearwater.

While tracking the Wolf Pack – and slyly covering their footprints – Harry Clearwater suffers a fatal heart attack in the woods. But in the film, we see that Harry's heart attack comes from the shock of being attacked by Victoria, who is seen stalking Charlie's hunting party from up in the trees. The change here allows plot points to converge, as the ensuing wolf pursuit of Victoria runs parallel to Bella's fateful cliff-jump into the ocean. And again, it gives Rachelle Lefevre something to do.

New Moon has way more funnies.

Credit Rosenberg for injecting more sly humor into New Moon, which was especially necessary in this installment. Supporting humans like Jessica, Mike, and Charlie add levity to their scenes with the somber Bella, while more subtle winks, like the comparison of werewolfiness to a "lifestyle choice" and Bella's transatlantic ride aboard a Virgin Atlantic airplane, display a self-aware sense of humor.

Jacob and Bella almost kiss. Twice!

New Moon is Jacob's movie, so Rosenberg rewards him with not one, but two almost-kisses. If you look closely, their lips ACTUALLY TOUCH the second time!

Jacob and Edward face off in the woods – just not when you expect.

If you've read New Moon, you're already expecting the tense "treaty" discussion between Jacob and Edward. Rosenberg wisely juggles the timeline a bit, placing it before the key conclusion (see #19), and adds one last phase for the furious Jacob. (It's the closest Bella's two men come to blows in New Moon.)

    Edward proposes!

Rosenberg saves the best for last, leaving Bella (and us) with the biggest possible cliffhanger. Again, the re-jiggered placement of the scene works better cinematically, and leads into the next film, Eclipse!

Alice's vision. OMG, spoilers! (Seriously, MAJOR spoiler here concerning future installments of the Twilight Saga.)

When Aro "sees" Alice's vision of the future, he lets her, Edward, and Bella go with the knowledge that sometime soon, Bella will become a vampire. As a special treat, the film shows us Alice's vision of Edward and Bella running through the woods (alas, in giggle-worthy outfits and slow motion). But after the snickers die down, think about exactly what you are seeing and you'll realize that it's essentially a preview of sorts… of something with the initials B and D!

"New Moon" hits the $200 Million mark

After hitting the theaters for 8 days, The Twilight Saga: New Moon has finally hit the $200 Million mark according to Variety. Read the article below:

In its eighth day of release, Summit Entertainment's "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" crossed the double-century mark making an estimated $206.1 million.

After Warner Bros.' football drama "The Blind Side" squeezed a few more bodies into the multiplex on Thanksgiving than "New Moon," the vampire sequel took the top spot back on Friday with $17.9 million at 4,042 theaters. That figure reps a 75% drop for "New Moon" from its first Friday.

New Moon now at $188.2M domestic, #3 opening week of all time

Looks like "New Moon" is raking in a lot of money after being in theaters for only 7 days according to ProNetworks.org.

Look for another #1 showing at the box office, with predictions of $60M being about average among analysts. Will they be proven wrong again?

    UPDATE 7:00 PM FRIDAY 11/27:

Thursday's box office estimates are in. The Twilight Saga: New Moon took in another $9.2M from 4042 locations with a per screen average of $2286 to kick off the four-day Thanksgiving holiday weekend. This increases the film's domestic total to $188.2M through its first seven days of release. The current worldwide total is $320.3M. There have been no new international numbers all week so the actual total should be much higher when Summit releases updated figures this Sunday.

With Friday-Thursday totals counted, The Twilight Saga: New Moon ($188.2M) had the third largest opening week of all time, behind The Dark Knight ($238.6M) and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest ($196M), and ahead of Spider-Man 3 ($182M). It also puts New Moon in sixth place on the all-time list of the first six days of wide release whenever they occurred, not just weekends. With just a few million to go to reach Twilight's total domestic box office take of $192,769,854, after today's numbers come in New Moon will have made more in eight days than Twilight did in its entire 147-day run from November 21, 2008 to April 2, 2009. Although the film was toppled from first place on Thursday by Warner Bros.' football-themed The Blind Side with $9.5M, New Moon is expected to take the weekend.

    UPDATE 3:00 PM THURSDAY 11/26:

Wednesday's box office estimates are in. The Twilight Saga: New Moon took in another $14.3M from 4024 locations with a per screen average of $3,554. This increases the film's domestic total to $179M. The current worldwide total is $311.1M.

    UPDATE 1:00 PM WEDNESDAY 11/25:

Tuesday's box office numbers are in. The Twilight Saga: New Moon took in another $11,328,695 from 4024 locations with a per theater average of $2815. This increases the film's domestic total to $164.7M and was the 11th highest grossing Tuesday for any film, 3rd highest since Christmas 2007. This also puts New Moon in sixth place on the all-time list of the first five days of wide release whenever they occurred, not just weekends. New Moon is now the #10 film of the year on the domestic charts and the 16th highest grossing film in the world. The current worldwide total is $296.8M.

There is no doubt the film will pass $300M worldwide today, if it hasn't already. Overseas numbers are slow to come in.

    UPDATE 11:00 PM TUESDAY 11/24:

THEATER COUNTS: Normally issued on Thursdays, numbers have just been released for the weekend of November 27-29. New Moon adds 18 theaters for a total of 4042. This is by far the largest release of the weekend, with second place going to holdover 2012 at 3444 and the new Old Dogs at 3425.

    UPDATE 4:00 PM TUESDAY 11/24:

Monday's box office numbers are in. The Twilight Saga: New Moon took in another $10,506,486 from 4024 locations, with a per theater average of $2611. This increases the film's domestic total to $153.3M and was the 14th highest grossing non-holiday Monday for any film, 4th highest since July 2008. This also places New Moon in sixth place on the all-time list of the first four days of wide release whenever they occurred, not just weekends. The current worldwide total, adding in $132.1M from overseas markets, is $285.4M.

    UPDATE 4:00 PM MONDAY 11/23:

The final domestic box office numbers for opening weekend show that The Twilight Saga: New Moon took in $142.8M. This is the official tally which, including the actual number for Sunday, has been revised upward by $2.1M from the previously announced $140.7M. This also results in an increase in the per theater average from $34,965 to $35,497.

Here is the reason why this overall number is higher than the one reported by the industry yesterday. After the Saturday box office totals came in on Sunday morning, the studio estimated what Sunday would be and came up with a weekend projection. That is standard industry procedure. Of course, Sunday and weekend figures can only be estimated at that point. The actual Sunday numbers weren't known until today (posted below). The actual numbers that come in on Monday are usually not too far off from the estimates made on Sunday. They usually adjust slightly up or down but are rarely far off. In this case, the number was underestimated, meaning that the percentage drop from Saturday to Sunday was smaller than anticipated and more people went to see New Moon than had been predicted. So the final number is revised upward by $2.1M. That may not sound like a lot, but think about this: of the top 90 films out this weekend, 83 made less than $2.1M.

After its record-shattering $72.7M first day Friday, there was a 41.8% drop from Friday to Saturday when it took in $42.3M. This was slightly larger than the percentage decrease Twilight had one year ago (down 40.8% Saturday). However, a smaller than anticipated 34.2% drop going into Sunday brought in another $27.85M for a weekend total of $142.8M and a per theater average of $35,497. Of the top 13 films only two had smaller Saturday to Sunday drops. Of the 118 movies reporting numbers this weekend, New Moon took in more money than all the other 117 films combined.

The reason for the less-than-anticipated drop on Sunday (as well as the surprising weekend box office overall) will no doubt be examined by everyone in the industry, but one interesting fact emerges. A film's box office decrease from Saturday to Sunday is generally affected most by word-of-mouth (or lack of it) and reviews. In the case of New Moon, the critics were quite unkind. Yet the public still continued to head to the theater in droves, more than even the studio had anticipated. Let's call it "the New Moon factor." From this point on, when a moviegoer is excited about a forthcoming film and is told, "but the reviews are awful," they can simply say, "look at New Moon."

This new number is the one that will go down in the record books, although it doesn't change the movie's position on the charts or add or remove any of the records it broke. The film stands in third place for all-time opening weekends, behind The Dark Knight ($158.4M) and Spider-Man 3 ($151.1M) and ahead of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest ($135.6M).
